As Nashville looked to open its first public golf course, the Park Board purchased 45 acres just north of Shelby Park. Here, George Livingston designed a 9 hole course that opened July 21, 1924. In 1930, the course was expanded to 18 holes, and the existing course became the back nine. The Shelby Golf Course stretches across rolling hills with steep slopes and many trees; it features no sand bunkers, instead placing greens on higher terrain to demand accuracy.
