February 14, 1779. Largest battle of the American Revolution in the Georgia backcountry. Roughly 600 Loyalists/Tories under James Boyd are attacked by combined forces of Georgia and South Carolina Militia under Col. John Dooly, Lt. Col. Elijah Clarke, and Col. Andrew Pickens, numbering roughly 300 men. Attacking at dawn, Pickens assaults the Tories directly, while Dooly and Clarke carry out a double pincer maneuver scattering the Tory forces. Boyd himself is killed in the encounter, about 150 of his troops are captured. Around 200 escaped northwards and join British forces in the Carolinas.
