April 6, 1862, 1100 - 1200. The divisions of Sherman and McLernand to the west collapsed and began streaming up the Pittsburg-Corinth road beginning 1130-1200.

A variety of US units consisting of the remnants of Benjamin Prentiss’s 6th Division and W.H.L. Wallace’s 2nd Division stumble upon a little used section of the Purdy-Hamburg stage road that was sunken slightly below surrounding terrain. US Grant himself, by now on the field in person, personally directs Prentiss to hold the area at all hazards.

All told, a variety of units totaling around 10,000 troops including artillery form a line of battle stretching east-west along the Sunken Road. Around this knot of resistance formed the sector later known as the Hornets Nest.
