Waters’ Alabama Battery (6 guns) supported by Deas’ Brigade, Hindman’s Division (CS) was positioned on this spur of Missionary Ridge, late afternoon November 25, 1863. As the Union Army of the Cumberland swept up the ridge, this position came under attack by the 2nd Minnesota of Van Derveer’s Brigade (US). As the Union troops overran the battery, fierce hand-to-hand fighting broke out. Five of the battery’s six artillery pieces were captured in the melee. The last, along with other elements of the routed Confederate army, fled down the east side of the ridge towards Chickamauga Creek.
