Before the city was named Toronto, it was called York. Fort York is one of the few historic military grounds in Canada. At the time of the War of 1812, the shore of Lake Ontario came up to the perimeter of Fort York. But over the years, infill from construction has been used to alter the shoreline.

During the construction of the Gardiner Expressway, the original plans were to demolish the Fort. However, community groups fought hard and eventually saved the Fort, thus explaining the odd jog that the highway takes.

  • There's about twice, maybe even three times as many historic military grounds on the East Coast (Maritimes) than further inland. Come check out Halifax harbour.
  • Halifax is a really nice place, I lived there for 2 years. The Harbour Hopper is pretty cool.
  • Since there's less historic military grounds this far inland, let's keep them shall we?
