radio station, closed / former military, United States Navy

Project ELF, which became operational in 1989, consisted of two transmitters: one near Clam Lake in Northern Wisconsin and the other here at Republic in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The Michigan and Wisconsin sites, separated by 145 miles as the crow flies, operated simultaneously to meet worldwide coverage requirements. Both were closed in 2004.
