Former Naval Air Station South Weymouth

Naval Air Station South Weymouth, or SOWEY as it is sometimes known, was an operational United States Navy airfield from 1942 to 1997. It was first established as a regular Navy blimp base during World War II. During the postwar era the base became an important component of the Naval Air Reserve Training Command, hosting a diverse and changing variety of Navy and Marine Corps reserve aircraft squadrons and other types of reserve units throughout the years.

The U.S. Coast Guard also maintains a buoy maintenance facility near the old railroad spur to the station.

There are currently plans to put movie studios, shops, housing, a wildlife park, and a golf course at the site of the former air station.

  • This is currently being redeveloped as a combination of condos, low-income housing, and retail shops. There was quite a bit of controversy over the planning.
  • I was the Job Site Supervisor on the Dickinson Art Gallery located at the entry from Route 18. The Air Station is basically being rebuilt as a new town. 2000+ new houses and 10million squre feet or Retail space. This should sufficiently overburden the exsting Rte 18 and the local authorities/ Utilities/ Schools. I'm all for progress (considering I'm in the Architecture/Construction industry) but this is going to drive prices of homes down as there will be a glut of extra homes available. Either way, I still think that it will eventually become it's own town.
