Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Varna)

Bulgaria / Varna / Varna / Han Krum Street, 19
17th century construction, Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Orthodox church

Historical data for this temple dates back to year 1602, when in fact it was built. During the construction it has been found that in the past there was also a temple. A stone with inscription in Greek reveals the following: "This temple of our Most Holy Mother of God was established, with the help and expense of all the poor Christians of this city in 1802".
According to researchers, the year was misspelled, and the fact that the inscription is in Greek suggests that the church was serving representatives of the Greek community in Varna.
The distinguishable about the construction of the church is that it was dug low. According to the restrictions at that time, Christian churches could not rise more than two meters above the ground.
Typical of this church are its icons, whose faces, contrary to the church writings and canons, look south, not west. Experts estimate that the icons located in the temple are a great wealth and treasure, something that few churches can boost of.
