Amtrak served Sparks with the California Zephyr through this station.

The Sparks station was closed in May of 2009 due to the proximity of the Reno, NV station. The Sparks station stop was used because of the need for a 20 minutes layover to change crews and fuel the engines. The Sparks stop allowed passengers boarding eastbound and disembarking westbound to save the 20 minutes compared to Reno. There were also worries about passengers using the layover time to in downtown Reno to visit casinos and risk failing to return to the train.
