railway, Amtrak

The Cameron Connector was built during 1996 to connect the Burlington Northern Railroad and Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway mainlines, as the two railroads were merging to form BNSF Railway. The primary purpose was to allow traffic using the ATSF Transcon to also use the former BN Galesburg Yard, several miles to the east. This also allowed Amtrak's Southwest Chief to use the former BN route between Cameron and Chicago, IL, beginning on July 31, 1996.
