The Canadian Pacific Railway crosses the Mississippi River on a series of bridges that were part of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, a route which opened on November 27, 1876.

This crossing of the Mississippi actually consists of four separate bridges. From the west, these are the Main Channel bridge (with a swing span), the East Channel, French Slough, and Black River channel
(with a drawbridge).

Amtrak's Empire Builder passenger train, which stops in La Crosse, crosses the Mississippi River daily on this bridge as it travels between Chicago and the west coast. The Empire Builder also crosses the river at Hastings and Little Falls.
