The first bridge here was built by the Winona and Saint Peter and opened on May 26, 1871. It collapsed under the first train using it and a replacement bridge opened on January 21, 1872. The Chicago and North Western Railroad acquired the Winona and Saint Peter, and continued to cross the Mississippi River here until abandonment of the bridge was approved on December 24, 1977. The C&NW's passenger train service on this route was with the Rochester 400, which made its last run on July 23, 1963.
