Kingsford Heights was built in 1942 on 775 acres of farmland in Union Township, just 10 miles south of the City of La Porte, on Hwy 6&35. President Franklin Roosevelt's plans for this city included 3000 homes, schools, police and fire departments, civic buildings and shops - a new place for workers of the Kingsbury ordnance Plant (KOP) to call home. 'Victory City', as it was called during planning, took 1 year to build. The design was selected to confuse possible invaders with streets changing names in the middle of town, keeping only the beginning letter alphabetically the same.
The town never reached the planned potential and became a ghost town after WWII when KOP closed and workers moved on. The remaining families literally bought the town. They raised money to buy out the government and formed a corporation to maintain town services. In 1956 the town was incorporated and got State money to revitalize. In the early 1970 many new homes were constructed, bringing new families. Today over 500 families reside in Kingsford Heights. There are many active community groups as American Legion, Hoosier Ball Club, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, PTA, and many church groups providing services to the residents of this rural town.It has a Elementary School, Townhall, Police & Volunteer Fire Department, the Kingsford Heights Branch of the La Porte County Public Library, many Churches and a few small businesses. A newly (1997) constructed Community Center is located next to Baseball fields and park in the center of town.
