city, capital city of state/province/region, county seat
State capital of Wisconsin and county seat of Dane County. The second-largest city in Wisconsin with a population of 231,054 at 2008. In 1836 the Wisconsin territorial legislature chose the area as the location for a new territorial capital in response to the lobbying of a local landowner. The town was plotted out and named for former President James Madison. The city was incorporated as a village in 1838 and remained state capital on statehood in 1848. It was incorporated as a city in 1856. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is located here.
