residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast
In 1929, noted architect James W. O'Connor completed this 17 room, 9500sqft white brick French Manorial residence for corporate executive Frederick H. Haggerson {industrialist, attorney}. Haggerson practiced law in Menominee MI and served there as District Attorney before joining the Department of Justice in Cleveland, then transferring to the New York office. In 1919 he joined Union Carbide and Carbon Corp. as a corporate attorney and worked his way into executive roles, becoming president, and then Chairman of the Board. He also served as a trustee of the Central Hanover Bank & Trust Company, Electric Furnace Products, and the Sault Ste. Marie Railroad. He was also an early member of the Sands Point Golf Club. Prior to the first subdivision in 1953, the estate had grown to 28 acres, with original landscaping by the Olmsted Brothers, many plantings of which remain around the surrounding homes today.
Tennis great Bobby Riggs lived in the estate through the 1960's, and sold it to real estate developer John Madonia in 1972, who in the late 1970's developed the remaining acreage surrounding the home, and Madonia Court was so named. Mansion is now #1 Madonia Ct., but the estate was originally #24 Rockwood Road East, when it's driveway ran from that road straight up to the main house and it's easterly outbuilding, once the chauffeur's residence with greenhouse, which is now part of the house to the east of the mansion. A small porch was recently added over the front door.
