A group of five joined buildings, four of which have five floors, and one with four. By address, the buildings are: 501 West 43rd Street (aka 593 Tenth Avenue), 595 Tenth Avenue, 597 Tenth Avenue, 501 1/2 West 43rd Street, and 503 West 43rd Street. Four of them were originally completed together to matching designs, and all were completed between 1888 and 1983. The four matching 5-story buildings are clad in red-painted brick with white stone trim.
No. 501 1/2 is separated by a narrow gap from the three on the avenue, joined together at the ground floor, where the entrance to No. 501 is located. The south facade of No. 502 1/2 has a central entrance atop a low stoop, with a modern glass-and-metal door and a tall transom. There is a carved garlands above the entry. On either side of the stoop, iron fencing encloses basement areaways, with a basement entrance below the stoop. To either side of the main entrance is a large single-window, and there are narrow, slightly-projecting brick piers framing both bays at the ground floor. The ground floor is banded with white stone, and has a broad stone band across the top. The upper floors have four bays of single-windows with stone sills and lintels. Projecting brick piers run from the 3rd-5th floors, and the brick spandrels between floors are various corbelled brickwork patterns. A black iron fire escape runs down the middle two bays of the facade, which is crowned by a black metal roof cornice.
The east facades of the three buildings along the avenue are all similar, with four bays of single-windows on the upper floors, and metal-and-glass storefronts on the ground floors. The northern two buildings have entrances to the upper floors at their north ends, framed by banded brick pilasters, with glass doors. The storefront at the south building, No. 593, is wider, since the residential entrance is located on 43rd Street. The trim on the upper floors is like that seen at No. 501 1/2, and a matching roof cornice caps the facades. The south facade of No. 501 West 43rd is banded on the ground floor, with a short return bay of the storefront from the east facade, framed by projecting piers. There is a metal serviced door near the middle, and the residential entrance at the far west end, is the connection to No. 501 1/2, atop a low stoop. The upper floors have three single-windows in the middle, flanked by a bay of paired windows, and single-window end bays. However, the east openings in the eastern paired-window bay have been bricked-in. A black iron fire escape runs down part of the middle of the facade.
No. 503 West 43rd at the west end is shorter and clad in orange brick. It has a plate-glass storefront bay at the west end (with a roll-down metal gate), a recessed commercial entrance in the middle (with a glass-and-metal door), and a different style of glass-and-metal door at the residential entrance on the right. The 2nd floor has a tripartite window on the right, and a similar window on the left has been replaced by a single-window next to a much smaller window. The top two floors originally had four bays of single-windows. At the 3rd floor the 2nd one from the west has been elongated to accommodate a fire escape landing, as has the east bay on the 4th floor. The west bay window opening on the 3rd floor has also been reduced in size.
Along the avenue, the ground floors are occupied by Hell's Kitchen Gourmet Deli, Baskin Robbins/Dunkin', and West Side Steakhouse.
