office building, commercial building
6-story office building completed in 1905 as a factory. Designed by W.A. Boring, it is clad in orange brick. The long south facade on 50th Street is organized into 12 bays, the western spaced closer together between narrower piers. This section also has the tall ground floor painted black, and originally had three large arches, but they are now filled-in, except for steel service doors in the eastern two, and a service double-doors in the western one. There is a single-window between each former arched opening. The rest of the ground floor to the east has segmental-arched bays, except for the 3rd bay where the arch has been replaced by a flat stone lintel; this bay has a double-window. The bay to the left has paired windows (partially arched to follow the top of the bay) and the west bay has another window in the east half of the bay, with a black metal door in the west half, atop a metal landing and sideways staircase. The two bays to the right of the flat-lintel bay have windows in one half of the bays, and one of them has a former doorway in its other half, now filled-in by cinder blocks. Brick pilasters divided the two halves in each of these bays. The 2nd bay from the east end has metal-framed glass infill with a glass door at the bottom, next to a black stone panel. The other bays to the left also have black stone panels below their windows. The east end bay is narrower, and has three small stone steps and a slightly-recessed, gate entrance below a black metal canopy. The ground floor is capped by a dentiled band course.
The upper floors have paired windows in each bay, joined by cream-colored stone sills and lintels framing brick spandrels. The 6th floor is set off by a projecting, black metal band course, and is topped by a broad black metal band with an aluminum coping.
The east facade on the avenue has six bays, with segmental-arches at the ground floor. The south one is open to the recessed, gates entryway from the south facade, and the others have double-windows above black stone panels, except for the north bay, which has a secondary entrance atop a low, metal landing.
The west facade is clad in brown brick and has eight bays of single-windows, one of which is bricked-in. There is also a yellow metal fire escape running down the 3rd bay from the front.
The building was purchased and occupied by Kenneth Cole Productions in 2006. It was sold in 2019, although the Kenneth Cole company still leases some space in the building as its headquarters.
