The Upper West Side is a large neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan.It lies between Central Park and the Hudson River and between West 59th Street and West 125th Street. It encompasses the sub-neighborhoods of Morningside Heights, Manhattan Valley and Lincoln Square.

Like the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side is an upscale, primarily residential, area, with many of its residents working in more commercial areas in Midtown and Lower Manhattan. While these distinctions were never hard-and-fast rules and now mean little, it has the reputation of being home to New York City's cultural and artistic workers, while the Upper East Side is traditionally perceived to be home to commercial and business types.

  • This neighborhood has been immortalized in any number of TV shows including "Seinfeld," "Law & Order," "Mad About You" and nearly half a dozen Woody Allen movies. Residents rave about their sense of community. Even though the term "Upper West Side" is often applied to everything from 59th Street all the way to 110th Street, the heart of the area is really in the 70s and 80s, with the American Museum of Natural History serving as a focal point. Crime? What crime? In 2006 20th Precinct of the N.Y.P.D. reported a total of one murder, seven rapes and 149 robberies for the year. Easy access to world class parks, transportation, schools, restaurants and architecture doesn't come cheap. A one-bedroom apartment will put you back $450,000 to $600,000 for a co-op, and as much as $800,000 for a condo. To Rent a studio on West End Avenue between West 77th Street and West 78th Street: $2,050 a month. There are places for single people to hang out, but the area's not real trendy.
