The archaeological site of Khatoy-Boarz is central and most significant among a number of others located around it in the vicinity of Surkhikhi, Yandere, Gazi-Yurt, Ekazhevo, and Ali-Yurt. Like the others, it has been subject to little study and there is little to be seen on the surface except for a few traces of ruins, earthworks and archaeological digs. Nevertheless, the size and centrality of the site and its defensive structures has been used propose identifying it with medieval Maghas, the capital of the Alans. This, in turn, has been used as justification for naming the newly-built capital of Ingushetia a few km to the west "Magas." The main archaeological concentrations are Khatoy-Boarz proper, 1.5 km southwest of Surkhikhi, and Erz-Eli by the artificial pond to the southwest, 1.7 km from Surkhikhi.
