The Khumar fortress is located on a height east of the Kuban river and northeast of modern Khumara. The innermost fortress is located on the northeastern end of the height. It dates to the Middle Ages, and is mentioned as an Alan town under the name Skhimar in Byzantine, Georgian, and Russian sources referring to the 9th-10th century.
