Luhansk is the administrative center of the Luhansk Oblast (province) of Ukraine.
The city is part of the historic region of Donbas.
Population - 424,113 (2014).

The city traces its history to 1795, when the British industrialist Charles Gascoigne founded a metal factory there. It was the beginning of an industry that still thrives there today.
Luhansk achieved the status of city in 1882. Located in the Donets Basin, Luhansk was developed by the Soviet authorities into an important industrial center of the Eastern Europe, particularly a home to the major locomotive-building company.

In 1935–1958 and 1970–1990 Luhansk has the name Voroshylovhrad.

According the 2001 Census, 49.6% of the inhabitants declared themselves as ethnically Ukrainians, 47% - as ethnically Russian.
Russian was the native language for 85.3% of the population, Ukrainian - for 13.7%, Armenian - for 0.2%, Belarusian for 0.1%.
