Volgograd (previously Stalingrad) is a city in Russia with a population of over 1 million. Originally known as Tsaritsyn, its name was changed to Stalingrad ('grad' = City) in 1925. During World War II, the biggest battle in human history took place here and the Russian victory saw the turning point of the course of the war. Under Nikita Khrushchev, it was renamed Volgograd in 1961 after the River Volga, and in 1967, what was then the largest statue in the world (entitled "The Motherland Calls") was erected here.
