The ruined site of the medieval city of Majar is located at modern Budennovsk (pronounced Budyonnovsk, previously Svyatoy Krest) in southern Russia. The city was an important center of the Golden Horde, briefly minted coins, and in 1395 was sacked by Timur. The archaeological site is largely covered up by the modern settlement west of the modern course of the Kuma river (where the upper and lower classes lived), and by agricultural fields to the east (where the merchant outer city was located). For centuries a series of impressive mausoleums marked the remains of the city, but they are now almost completely destroyed. The site is subject to continued archaeological investigation.
