Designed in 1880 by the Associated Artists/Tiffany Studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Samuel Colman, Lockwood de Forest and Candace Wheeler with Stanford White and artists George Yewell and Francis D. Millet. Its opulent interior has been described as being influenced by the Greek, Moresque, and Celtic with a dash of the Egyptian, Persian, and Japanese.

It underwent a restoration by Herzog & de Meuron with Platt Byard Dovell White Architects and EverGreene Architectural Arts in 2016. As part of the restoration, the room was dampened to remove all exterior noise.
