The owls on the Shimkin Building formerly stood on the cornice of Stanford White’s New York Herald Building, until its partial demolition in the 1920s. The newspaper’s original bequest to NYU, made in 1928, consisted of the Herald clock, the figures of two bell ringers (affectionately referred to as Stuff and Guff), a statue of Minerva, and 22 owls. The ringers, clock, and four of the bronze owls were incorporated into a monument at Herald Square in 1939, where they remain to this day across from Macy's.
