The 40 room house, one of the most opulent of the Gold Coast estates, is almost 200 feet long and at one point almost 100 feet wide, with an 80-foot tower built by E.W. Howell & Co. of Babylon. This structure, the main house of the estate, was started after Gould's wife disapproved of "Castlegould," to the southeast, which itself became the stables and servants quarters. The interior was decorated by Wm. Baumgarten & Co.

Estate was sold in 1917 to Daniel Guggenheim {industrialist, financier, capitalist}. Guggenheim served as director of numerous banks and mining companies and was a member of the Guggenhim Brothers mining holding company. Rocketry pioneer Robert Goddard frequented here—his groundbreaking work eventually funded by the Guggenheims. He endowed the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aeronautics at New York University.

During WWII, the estate become home to a group of 8 British refugees who had relocated from England to wait out the war. Realizing their new guests, the estate was equipped with a playroom on the first floor and outdoor equipment like slides and seesaws in the garden. Simaltaniously, the tower of the estate was used 24/7 as an observation post by members of the Port Washington and Manhasset American Legion posts.

In 1942, Florence Guggenheim donated the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences who sold it in 1946 to the federal government for use by the Naval Training Devices Center which undertook extensive alterations to use the main home as a research facility. In 1971, the estate was sold to Nassau County which uses it as part of the Sands Point County Park & Preserve where it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The main house's interior court served as a filming location for the 1998 version of "Great Expectations" by Alfonso Cuarón.
