abandoned / shut down, prisoner-of-war camp, historic remains
Currently part of Michaux State Forest. This area was a farm associated with the Pine Grove Furnace iron making operation beginning in the late 18th century; the last wheat crop was harvested in 1919. The farm became Civilian Conservation Corps camp S-51 in the 1930s, then was taken over by the US Army in WW2 as a clandestine Prisoner of War camp holding mostly German submariners for interrogation. A church then used it as a summer camp into the mid-1970s when the area was finally abandoned. Remains of building foundations and waterworks are still visible.
