The old Catholic Orphanage

This complex of social edifices, erected together with the Church of St. Elisabeth, was initiated by the Empress Maria Theresa, who, by order issued on 1 September 1767, ordered the City Magistrate to give to the Jesuit priest Theophil Delphini, to establish a Catholic orphanage, the previously intended buildings for the Austrian emigrants who arrived in Sibiu after religious persecution and settled in villages around the city.
In 1858 the Catholic Bishop of Transylvania raised this institute to the rank of normal school for teachers.
In front of the edifice there is placed, since 1909, the bust of the Emperor Maria Theresa.
