The first bridge at this location opened here in 1865, it was the second crossing of the river following the bridge at Rock Island. It allowed the Chicago and North Western to become the first railroad to reach Council Bluffs in 1867. The present double track bridge was built beside the original during 1909. Today this crossing is on the mainline of the Union Pacific, one of the busiest railroad bridges over the river.
