Andrew Carnegie's Keystone Bridge Company built the first bridge here during 1868, connecting the Illinois Central Railroad's lines in Illinois with those in Iowa. The original bridge was replaced with the current one in 1899, which is now operated by Canadian National. Amtrak's Black Hawk passenger train ran over this bridge until September 30, 1981, are there are plans to return Amtrak service to Dubuque.
