The Green Mountain wreck was the worst railway disaster in Iowa history, 52-57 dead and dozens more injured.

On March 21, 1910, 8am a train with two steam engines and twelve passenger cars was traveling from Marshalltown to Waterloo. While at high speed, one or both of the steam engines derailed and instead of sliding along the rail ties, went into the bank and came to a sudden stop. Following behind the engines were wooden chair cars with heavier metal Pullman sleeper cars at the rear of the train. Upon the sudden stopping of the engines, the heavier Pullman sleeper cars pushed through the wooden chair cars, telescoping them. The event was sudden, and did not allow time for passengers to avoid the ensuing injury or death.
