Government Bridge (Davenport, Iowa)

The first bridge across the Mississippi River on this site opened to traffic in November of 1872, serving the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. It replaced the original 1856 bridge located just upriver.

The present Government Bridge here opened on December 1, 1896. It features a rotating swing span at the south end over the locks to allow for barges and other river traffic to pass through. The current bridge is on two levels, one for rail traffic, one for auto traffic.

Railroad bridges were built at 56 locations to cross the Mississippi River,
and 36 of these crossings are still in use by freight railroads.
