Chicago Great Western's Winston Tunnel was the longest railroad tunnel in Illinois. During 1968 the CGW was merged into the Chicago and North Western, which already had a route across the state, leading to the abandonment of this tunnel. A total of 8 railroad tunnels were built in Illinois, of which 4 remain in service.
