The first crossing at this location opened in 1882, which lasted until replaced in 1906. The bridge allowed the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad to reach Kansas City and Omaha from Chicago. The CMSP&P was merged into Canadian Pacific's Soo Line Railroad, which in turn sold this route, forming the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern. Canadian Pacific is now in the process of acquiring the IC&E,
and once again reaching Kansas City.
