residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, Georgian (architecture)
Estate home designed c. 1921 in the Georgian Revival style by John Russell Pope on 1,714 acres for Marshall Field, III {publisher}. Field was the founder of Field Enterprises which included the Chicago Times newspaper. The residence served as a part-time home for the Field family, along with their homes in NYC, Chicago, Maine and South Carolina. The estate featured a farm group by Alfred Hopkins, indoor tennis structure by Warren & Wetmore and several service buildings by John Russell Pope. Olmsted designed the formal gardens with plantings from Hicks Nursery; Marian Cruger Coffin designed landscaping for the "Winter Cottage" guest house. John Jacob Levison also contributed landscaping design. John Russell Pope coordinated and managed the work of all these designers into a unified composition that, once completed, exhibited the cohesiveness and patina of a long-established country estate.
In the 1950's two large sections of the house, one from each end, were removed by Ruth Field, Marshall's third wife under the direction of Bradley Delehanty. Before it became Caumsett State Park the area was being considered for a bridgehead on a connection to Connecticut. The interior was renovated as a designer showcase property in 2003.
