448-foot, 33-story postmodern residential building completed in 2017. Designed by Karl Fischer Architect & SLCE, the tower is set back atop a 3-story base. Both the east and south facades of the base are clad in a glass curtain wall, with the main entrance near the center of the Madison Avenue side, slightly recessed in a 2-story grey granite surround, and covered by a metal canopy. The top floor of the base contains a single residential unit, with terrace space on the roof of the base, and a private lap pool.

The tower portion also has a silvery glass curtain wall and silver metal spandrels, with each facade divided into three parts by pairs of large, fluted, dark-grey stone piers. The 4th floor, the first above the base, is recessed behind the piers. There are small setbacks at the outer bays above the 21st and 27th floors on the south facade. On this facade, the stone piers are joined by a horizontal fluted band above the 27th floor, creating a frame for the center bays of the lower floors. From the 2nd setback, the piers continue (unfluted now) up to the top, where they are joined again by a horizontal beam, creating another frame for the center bays of the upper floors. These bays are recessed between the piers and have projecting balconies with glass railings extending just beyond the piers. The 1-unit "skyhouse" at the top also includes a private lap pool on its terrace, with an infinity edge, appearing as a top balcony on the west facade, as well as a spa with another infinity edge, on the south facade. At the other facades, the fluted stone piers extend all the way up to the top before joining as frames for the center bays. On these facades, the top level of floors also have matching balconies. Above the main roof terrace, a tall mechanical equipment housing is oriented to the north part of the roof.

172 Madison has a total of 69 condominiums, including 4 penthouses, the 3rd-floor "Mansion", and the top-floor "Skyhouse". The ground floor is occupied by 172 NYC Dental.
