Old Navy Herald Square (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 34th Street, 144
 commercial building, postmodern (architecture)

3-story Neo-Art-Deco mercantile building originally completed in 1900. It was completely remodeled with a new facade in 1998. Old Navy moved into the building as its flagship store in New York in 2000. Both facades on 33rd & 34th Street are clad in pre-cast stone with light rustications and a grey granite water table. The south facade is wider, with an expanse of plain stone at the west end that has a service door and freight entrance. The rest of the facade matches the north side, with projecting piers framing a curtain wall of grey metal and green-tinted glass. There is a gentle arch at the top, with Art-Deco-like elements. A large metal-and-glass canopy covers the ground-floor entrance, flanked by wall-mounted light fixtures. A large Old Navy sign sits atop the canopy and a clock hangs below it on the 33rd Street side. On the 34th Street side, the glass on the upper floors has been replaced with segments of a large advertising image.
