Jack Demsey's Pub (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 33rd Street, 36

4-story pub building originally completed in the late 1800s as a store-and-loft building. In the 1940s it was the Stan-Ban & Delicatessen, and now houses a sports bar called Jack Demseys' Pub. The black wood and glass ground floor is framed by a pair of columns faced in cobbled stones. The 2nd & 3rd floors have three bays framed by beige cast-iron, and divided by slender, rounded black cast-iron pilasters. The 2nd-floor bays have paired narrow windows set in wide, red-painted iron frames. The 3rd floor has larger windows, also in red-painted frames. A diminutive black metal cornice caps the 2nd floor, and a larger modillioned cornice tops the 3rd floor. The 4th floor is faced in beige smooth stucco, with three smaller windows, each with a black splayed stone lintel. The black metal roof cornice at the top has a neon sign for the pub. Another large, vertical neon sign is attached to the west edge of the facade, running from the 2nd-4th floor.

In 1950 when I was 5 years old and living up North in Rockland County my parents tool me here to have dinner with some of their friends. I recall seeing Jack walking through, greeting customers and chatting with people. Also a waitress came by selling tiny pairs of boxing gloves, the size you could hang on your rear view mirror. I heard the Spanish tone in her voice and used the two spanoish phrases we had learned at Cherry Lane School (K-1) Buenos Dais and Muy Bien, Gracias. The lady was delighted. i do not recall a reaction from my Parents or friends.
