condominiums, Art Deco (architecture), 1930_construction
10-story Art-Deco residential building completed in 1930. Designed by Louis Shampan as an office building, it spans six bays on Broadway, and five bays on 29th Street. The ground floor is lined with modernized storefronts; it has a replacement grey granite entrance surround at the south bay on Broadway, and an original stone service entrance with a metal roll-down gate at the west bay on 29th. The 2nd-3rd floors have fluted stone piers (framed in tan brick around the outer bays) with Art-Deco carved patterns on the stone capitals. Brown iron mullions divided each bay into three windows, except for the middle bay on 29th Street, which has five windows. All the windows have transoms, and brown iron spandrels with geometric design separate the two floors in each bay. The 3rd floor is capped by a grey stone band with intricate abstract geometric and floral carvings.
The upper floors are clad in buff-colored brick, with paired windows in each bay, except for the middle bay on 29th Street, which has three windows. The end bays project forward slightly, as they do on the lower floors. Between the uninterrupted brick piers are brick spandrels with geometric brickwork. The piers extend up above the roof line, and have Art-Deco ornament at the capitals of the wider piers framing the end bays. Both main facades are dotted with protruding air-conditioning units.
The south elevation is cement stuccoed, with four narrow bays of windows near the front on the top five floor, and six narrow bays at the rear of the wall. In between is a blank wall space with an elevator bulkhead that extends up above the main roof line. The western elevation is cement stuccoed, with two bays of windows at the exposed front. The ground floor is occupied by European Fragrances, P&K Sterling Silver & Marcasite Jewelry, B.J.K. Industrial Corp., Young One Fashions/Just Fantastic importer/exporter, Monaco wigs, and Star New York Group import/export.
