office building, high-rise, Art Deco (architecture), 1928_construction
327-foot, 27-story Art-Deco office building completed in 1928. Designed by Buchman & Kahn for A.E. Lefcourt, it is clad in buff-colored brick above a 4-story stone base. The Broadway facade is five bays wide, while the south side on 37th Street spans 11 bays (the end bays being narrower). There is a very narrow chamfered corner at the southeast.
The main entrance is at the middle of the Broadway facade, slightly recessed, glassed-in and framed by a light-colored, textured stone enframement. The address numbers 1375 are inscribed above the entrance, and also illuminated on the side-facing white metal panels of the recessed area. On either side are modernized glass-and-metal storefonts. There is a secondary entrance in the middle of the south facade, framed in grey granite. To the right are continuations of the southern storefronts on Broadway, and to the left are smaller storefronts with recessed entries up sets of steps, as well as a freight entrance in the 3rd bay from the west. The ground floor is capped by a stone band course with a Greek fret-motif. The 2nd-4th floors have fluted, engaged white stone columns with stylized capitals separating the bays, and doubled around the end bays. The middle bays have tripartite windows in black iron frames cast in decorative patterns (also on the spandrels); the end bays have single-windows with the same iron spandrels. A stone cornice caps the base on both facades, with LEFCOURT STATE BUILDING carved at the center of both.
The upper floors have three windows in each main bay, and two windows in the end bays. Stone band courses line the top of the 5th floor and bottom of the 6th. The space between has geometric stone ornament at the piers. At the end bays, each floor has geometric diamond-patterned brickwork in the spandrels. There are four shallow setbacks at the top, with cast-stone ornament at each setback.
The ground floor is occupied by Viver Design evening gowns, Bluestone Lane coffee shop, a TD Bank branch, and I (Heart) NY Gifts.
