1407 Broadway (New York City, New York)

512-foot, 42-story early-modern office building completed in 1950 for 1407 Broadway Realty Corp./William Zeckendorf. Designed by Kahn & Jacobs, it occupied most of the irregularly shaped block, wrapping around the building on the southwest corner. All the facades are clad in off-white brick with continuous horizontal bands of windows. A small, angled, 3-story wing juts out at the southeast corner to follow the path of Broadway. Behind it rises the lower tower portion, which sets back above the 17th floor. Recessed further back is the intermediate tower portion, which ends at the 21st floor, leaving the rest of the main tower to rise straight to the last setback at the 40th floor. Above is the 2-story penthouse ending in a flat roof. There is a setback above the 3rd floor along the entire width of the north facade on 39th Street. At the middle of the structure, there are setbacks beginning above the 14th floor, leading to the lower roof at the 21st floor. At the west end of the building, the north facade has no other setbacks above the 14th floor, although the west facade on 7th Avenue has one above the 18th. The only facade section that isn't fully covered by the distinctive window and mullion banding is the west facade of the upper main tower (on the east end of the building). Here, only the four northern bays have window bands, but with double-windows between each mullion instead of singles. There are two bays of single-windows just north of center on this facade, and three more bays of double-windows at the south edge.

The original red granite and white brick on the ground floor was replaced in a 2016 renovation with white metal panels and new plate-glass storefronts. A gallery connects the restored Broadway and Seventh Avenue lobbies, and Art-Deco lobby embellishments include metallic gold and silver leaf ceiling applications and restoration of marble floors to their original luster. The windows, originally framed in green metal and separated by red metal mullions, are now framed in black, with white mullions.

The ground floor is occupied by Ziani, menswear Dig Inn restaurant, Num Pang Kitchen, Mighty Quinn's BBQ, Abigael's restaurant, Luke's Lobster restaurant, Juice Generation, Gregorys Coffee, a Capitol One Bank branch, and a Wells Fargo Bank branch. There are freight bays and loading docks at the middle of the north facade on 39th Street.
