Lifesaver Lofts

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Eleventh Avenue, 120
condominium, 1909_construction, art museum / art gallery

7-story residential and gallery building originally completed in 1909 as a 5-story factory designed by Joseph Wolf & Freeman Bloodgood, Jr. From 1913 to 1916 was occupied by the Mint Products Company, which made Lifesavers candy. Subsequently in the 1980s and 1990s it housed the Spike bar, a gay club. In 2009, two new penthouse floors were added to the top, setback towards the east side of the building. The addition is designed by Studio D + Forum architects. They contrast sharply with the original building, clad in white stone, teak wood, and broad expanses of glass.

The original five lower floors are clad in orange brick , with bluestone coping and terra-cotta firerproof blocks. The corner at 11th Avenue & 20th Street is chamfered, with one bay of windows. The 1st and 2nd floors have rusticated brick piers. The ground floor is occupied by Edward Tufte Modern Gallery, Elizabeth Dee Gallery, and Mac Adams Gallery.
