Stone Age Settlement/Quarry

Egypt / al-Wadi al-Jadid / El Harga /
 archeological site, neolithic age, settlement

On top of this hill, round stone circles are the remains of a little stone age settlement. The hilltop was not only attractive for the people of that time because of the overlook over the plaines around but also because of the special stone they obviously broke here: it is a quite rough, dark sandstone that was used for the slabs of the little mills, the stone age people used to grind grain and which still can be found at many places in the Libyan Desert. The little quarry is still to be detected on the southern end of the small plateau of the hill. This site was dicovered by chance by Samir Lama Expedition in spring 2001 when one car got stuck in soft sand and Samir decided after hard efforts to get free to stay overnight here. Some members of the expedition climbed the hill for a sundowner and found the settlement.
