Scholastic Building (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / Broadway, 557
 office building, postmodern (architecture)

155-foot, 10-story postmodern office building completed in 2000. Designed by Aldo Rossi (his last building designed before his death in 1997). It spans through the block to Mercer Street. On the main Broadway facade, its three main bays are separated by thick white steel columns, with red iron cross beams between floors. The beam above the 2nd floor reads "SCHOLASTIC". Some of the floors are separated by green iron spandrel beams between the white columns. Later alterations were made in 2010 by Gensler.

The rear facade on Mercer is also constructed of steel/iron and glass, but with a much different design. Recessed metal panels form 2-story angled sections that repeat up the facade, with green iron spandrels every other floor. Built as the main building of Scholastic Inc., publisher and distributor of children's books, it also houses Scholastic's retail store. The building replaced a 1-story garage from the 1950s.
