The Brevoort Apartments

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Fifth Avenue, 11
 apartment building, 1955_construction

184-foot, 19-story modernist cooperative-apartment building completed in 1955 for Sam Minskoff & Sons. Designed by Boak & Raad, it has 296 apartments that were converted to cooperatives in 1981. The light-colored, glazed brick building has a series of setbacks at high level on the Fifth Avenue end and features a landscaped driveway. The metal-framed casement windows are mostly in groups of three, but there are also single windows, and some doubles, especially around the corners and secondary facades. Some of the corners have inset, recessed balconies. The interior lobby was designed by the noted firm of Theodore Hofstatter & Co. with a series of 16'x8' paintings of naval aviation by Paul Sample. Sumner D. Kilmarx, former president of the Hofstatter firm, commissioned Sample specifically.

The project is named after the hotel that occupied its site that was named after one of the oldest and most famous Dutch families in New York. Musician Buddy Holly lived in the replacement apartments in 1958-59, from his marriage until his death. He recorded what are known as The Apartment Tapes here. There is an underground parking garage located between The Brevoort and its neighbor the Brevoort East, accessed from either 8th or 9th Streets. The ground level on 8th Street is occupied by H&R Block, a UPS store, Furry Paws, and La Mode organic cleaners.
