The first three Enercon E33 335-kW turbines were installed in 2007. Phase 2, completed in 2010, consisted of a further three turbines and three flywheels (used to store the energy generated by the turbines). The combined nominal capacity of the 6 turbines is 2 MW.
Winds frequently exceed the 34 mph safe maximum of the turbines. At times the 6 machines have supplied up to 50% of the island's power. 17 kWh equals 1 gallon of diesel for generators. A smart grid systems sets the blades to provide a constant power level and other generators are regulated to match demand.
