    The stray dogs of Punta Arenas seem to favor a statue of Ferdinand Magellan to hang out. The toe of a native included in the monument is fast wearing out because people rub it for good luck. Magellan discovered the Pacific Ocean from here enabling him to sail to Guam and the Philippines. He was killed in Philippines for intervening in a local dispute. He was 42 years old. There is a museum with artifacts from the local area including shrunken heads.
