The rich history of the clock tower is evident from the two stone slabs with inscriptions in Arabic, built-in its structure. It was constructed around the mid-XVIII century, and then, in 1859 it was restored by master Bogdan. He was supposedly a very renowned master stonemason – he’s been building stone houses, public fountains and sepulchral cross-slabs. The tower is 23.50 m tall. It’s built of small-sized ashlar. Its four corners are decorated in white limestone. Its top is crowned by a two-storey timber superstructure with the clock and the small tower above it. The clockwork was delivered from Vienna by the distinguished citizen of Svishtov - Yancho Stanchov. During the 1977 great earthquake the clock tower suffered considerable damage. Subsequently, strengthening works have been performed in order to preserve it up until the present day. The clock tower is one of the symbols of Svishtov, of its many-century economic and cultural growth.
