This ancient town is located near the village of Nikyup, the district of Veliko Tarnovo, at 20 km from the town of Veliko Tarnovo.
Nicopolis ad Istrum was a Roman and Early Byzantine town founded by Emperor Trajan around 101-106, at the junction of the Iatrus (Yantra) with the Danube, in memory of his victory over the Dacians.
The official name of the city was Ulpia Nocopolis ad Istrum. It means the victorious city of Ulpius on the Danube River. The name comes from the Greek goddess of victory – Nike and the Latin name of Danube – Istros. Adding the name of the river was necessary, because there were six other cities with the name of Nicopolis. Ulpia comes from the name of the father of emperor Trajan.
