Former Unicum Building

Romania / Sibiu / Nicolae Bălcescu Street, 38
Baroque (architecture), mixed-used building, 18th century construction

Building erected in the second half of the 18th century, in Baroque style. The rooms upstairs keep baroque stucco on the ceiling and in the attic there is a Gothic pinion, belonging to the previous house.
In 1886, Emil Kirscher opened a meat, sausage and mineral water store here. From around 1890 it became a winery and a place where snacks were served (Frühstücksstube).
Towards the end of the 19th century, he bought the building and transformed the place into a Restaurant, which after 1901 will be called Unicum.
The restaurant will survive under the same name and in the same space until 2011, being one of the longest-lived restaurants in Sibiu.
